This is an introductory course where we were taught the elements and principles of design through the use of several different materials and methods, and how to integrate them into works of art.

Introduction to 2D Design

Color Theory Project

For this assignment, I was to use my knowledge on color theory and Photoshop to create an intricate geometric design that demonstrates value change and balance. I chose the color red to use to show the value change, and used the gradient tool in Photoshop to achieve the different values. The geometric shape I used is a diamond, and I achieved radial balance by folding each of them in the middle and gluing them on top of one another until it had an equal amount of diamonds on each side. When finished, I glued the project on a foam board.

For this assignment I was to create a collage of letters of the alphabet based on their observations of the natural and/or built environment. My letters were to have a specific theme, and for that I chose Downtown Lynchburg. I put all of the pictures I took into Photoshop to create a grid design. This project greatly demonstrates a few of the elements of design which are, pattern, texture, line, and shape.

Rendering Project

For this assignment I was to use my knowledge on Photoshop to create two renderings in two different color schemes, analogous and complementary. For my analogous scheme I chose the colors blue, purple, and red because they are three hues that sit directly next to each other on the color wheel. For my complementary scheme I chose red and green because they sit exactly opposite of each other on the color wheel. I also added highlights (light coming through the windows and from lamps) and shadows (behind doors and under furniture) to make it look more realistic and showcase my Photoshop rendering skills at the same time.

Group Poster Project

For this project my group was tasked with designing a set of three posters to help promote the Family and Consumer Sciences Department, and utilize three principles of design. The poster I created was the middle one promoting the Professional & Creative Industries and Family & Child Development majors. The three different principles we achieved are unity, emphasis, and scale. We created unity with the use of the same colors throughout, emphasis with the brighter, bolder color for the major title, and scale in the size of the fonts used for each major.

Scale Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to learn how to accurately represent the importance of using the correct scale. I picked out a striped repeating fabric and hand rendered one chair at 7.75” scale, and the second one at 15.5” scale.
